- This whole "IBM drops OS/2 for PPC" stuff is another example of crazy rumours
- that grow wilder each day without any substantial truth in it.
- I'm also sneaking into the OS/2 newsgroup from time to time,
- the truth is that IBM is shipping a version of OS/2 for PPC now, admittedly
- on a low profile. Why they don't shout it out is beyond me. However, they
- have a version ready and that is the reason why they don't develop it further
- *this year*. Instead, they'll concentrate on the Intel version (OS/2 4.0 Merlin),
- because that's the market where the battle finally is fought.
-
- Furthermore, IBM is well committed to the PowerPC. They are not just "in a
- contract", they've *invented* that beast. BTW PPC has a lot of options as far
- as OSs go: MacOS, WindowsNT (gulp), AIX (im typing this on a PPC/AIX machine),
- now OS/2 and soon Solaris and later hopefully AmigaOS. Not to forget the
- embedded controllers with LynxOS and possibly OS-9000. Admittedly, they ought
- to push forward the performance quite a bit. This is the only thing that
- I don't quite understand: two well-known, rich and powerful hardware makers take
- so long to blow this Intel and other junk out of the water.
